Whilst the most relaxing holiday is one that takes you from your hotel room to the beach and at lunchtime or evening to the restaurant. There comes a moment when you gaze at the distant mountains and wonder what is on the other side.

Pollonia is a village - small at that, although it has everything you want such as shops and restaurants  it is still nice to explore further. Milos is a different island just as all islands are different from each other in Greece. The people are quite distinct because like all small communties they come from no more than several original clans which probably means that those with the same family name are related in some way or other. It makes them clanish and sometimes very defensive of their life and their island. In Milos there have been many changes in the last 50 years in both tourism and industry. Travel around the island and you will not only recognize these changes but come to love Milos and its beauty.

BUS TIMES JUNE THROUGH SEPTEMBER:
To Adamas (main port town) 0720 - 1030 - 1145 - 1300 - 1430 - 1645 - 1745 - 1930 - 2030

TAXI  There is no taxi stand but you can call a taxi without call out charge and the fare to Adamas is 11 Euro's  2007/8. Do be sure the driver has a list of fares in his cab because these are not metered taxis but vehicles known as Agoraians which  means fares are fixed between points but negotiable on long distances. Fares are fixed by law every season and must be displayed. If the driver does not display the prices demand to see them and if you are not happy with the service inform the police with the vehicle plate number. It will be followed up as throughout Greece it is a serious offence for private hire vehicles to  overcharge and the authorities are well aware it hurts tourism if overcharging is practiced. Most drivers are honest but there are those who are not and they are heavily prosecuted with their licence taken away if caught.
FERRIES AND SEA TRIPS. The ferry to Kimolos runs six times daily and takes vehicles. It is reasonably priced at under 11 Euro's each way for a car and 2 Euro's per passenger 2007/8. There is no need to book just go on board and pay the purser. It is well worth at  least a day out on Kimolos because the beaches are clean and it still retains a feeling of the old Greece. There is one taxi there! A bus that (sometimes) runs from the port to Hora the main village. It is best to take a vehicle as the best beaches are some distannce by foot - about half an hour and Hora is steep uphill. The beach around the port is not so good although the few restaurants there are very good, there are two or three more up in Hora, all serve food which is particular to Kimolos. Other ferry services to the mainand and other islands are in the main port town of Adamas.
Sea trips are mainly from Adamas but one of note from Pollonia three times weekly is by Captain Andreas on the Perseus that takes trips with picnic to Kimolos and Polyergos and also evening trips several times a week with ouzo or wine and mezes (snacks) to Glaronissia (Gulls Island) with its unique rock formation and fabulous sunsets. He is very reasonable with his charges and very knowledgable about the  local scenery and also speaks fair English and some German.

AROUND MILOS If you want to visit places not on bus routes you do need to hire a vehicle either in the main town or here in Pollonia. Milos does not have lot of archeological sites but two are interesting. Filakopi just two kilometers on the main road from the village towards Adamas is the site on the old Minoan town of the same name with its ruins of foundations and old cave houses and also a popular place for sunbathers on the rocks below the site.
The Catacombes are Milos' best claim to fame as nearby is the site where the Venus de Milo was discovered just by the ancient theatre which is quite well preserved. the catacombes themselves are a dissapointment to some as not all the galleries are opening to public viewing.
